Makai is a land divided. The wilds are teeming with evil kitsunes and other less desirable spirits. Koorine keep to themselves on their silly floating island, the cowards. We Youkai are the most numerous and strongest force to be reckoned with in Makai, and we rule well. Social status is determined by clan. Those silly Jujinkai also have a clan hierarchy, but they are not to be confused, our youngest clans are still much older than their beginnings.
Dragon Clan
This clan rules Youkai, always has. Legend tells they are the direct lineage of the Dragon God that created Makai.
Recently, when the Shadow Clan became so strong, the Ruler and his direct line were immediately escorted from Makai to ensure that once the Dragons had defeated the Shadows, the true Ruler could return to the Makai Throne.
The Dragon/Shadow War is now coming to a close.
Kouryou
These are in actually not their own clan, but a sect of the Dragon Clan. Centuries ago a group of Dragon more interested in magic and study than in the traditions of battle began spouting their ideals. They were ousted and driven underground, legends say their skin turned dark to represent their curse to forever exist beyond the true Dragon Clan. They named themselves the Kouryou - "a dragon which has already ascended to Heaven" because they believe their way of life is a blessed one and in the afterlife they will be rewarded for their pacifist ways. Members of this sect learn early in their lives how to shapeshift, often into more dragon-ish forms and also more ningen guises to hide themselves better when they dare to surface.
Phoenix Clan
This clan is rumored to have died out centuries ago, so long ago even the rumors of their extinction are too faded to be recalled. It is said they once trained and selected the protector phoenix spirits that bonded themselves to the head male of the Dragon Clan and his male descendents, the True Rulers of all Makai. There are not so much as rumors that any of this clan survive.
They are gone forever.
Shadow Clan
The second strongest clan, these are dangerous rebels who seek nothing more than their clan to rule Makai. Their warriors are taught very early the complete mastery of all Shadow spells.
